A case report of renal cell carcinoma in a dog Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Paşca,A.-S.; Lazăr,M..
Mix renal carcinoma was noticed during the necropsic examination of a 14 year old mix breed female. Tumours were bilateral and metastasis was noticed in the spleen and myocard. Histological examination evidenced morphological aspects characteristic to the mixt renal carcinoma. Histological aspects described in this individual characterize renal cell carcinoma, also known as renal adenocarcinoma, hypernephroma or, in older literature, Grawitz tumour.

A long term study of bonamiosis in Quiberon bay, France ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Miossec, Laurence; Blanchet, Estelle; Garcia, Celine; Joly, Jean-pierre; Francois, Cyrille; Berthe, Franck.
Bonamiosis was first reported in association with mass mortality of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, in June 1979 in L'Ile Tudy, Brittany. The disease rapidly spread to all of the oyster farming areas in France but also in other European countries. The French flat oyster production, which already suffered from another protozoan disease, marteiliosis, decreased from 5500 mt in 1979 to less than 2000 mt after 1980. In 2001, about 350 French farms sell 1650 mt of flat oysters. This production mainly relies on natural spat collection which specially occurs in Quiberon bay. One third of this spat is transferred from South to North Brittany for further growth. Quiberon bay constitutes an interesting site regarding the surveillance of bonamiosis because of the...

A preliminary study of the aetiology, epizootiology and pathology of 'rusty-yellow' skin discolouration of tilapia species (Oreochromis niloticus and Tilapia zilli OceanDocs
Oladosu, H.A.; Ayinla, O.A.; Ajiboye, M.O.; Egbomuche, G.; Onuoha, G.C..
An upsurge in the prevalence of rusty-yellow discoloration of the skin of the two tilapia species, being cultured at the African Regional Aquaculture Centre (ARAC), gave a basis for an urgent clinical and epizootiological studies of the condition. The studies were therefore carried out along with the performance of some catfishes in polyculture with Oreochromis niloticus, under the integrated poultry cum fish farming system. It was observed that this condition affects the tilapia species only, and the antemortem, and postmortem examination revealed that the discolouration is restricted to the surface of the cutaneous tissue; affecting the underside of the exposed part of the scales, the fins and the skin flap covering the scale pockets, mostly in adult...

Acute renal failure in a horse following bee sting toxicity Ciência Rural
Ribeiro,Paula Reis; Bianchi,Matheus Viezzer; Henker,Luan Cleber; Gonzales,Fernando; Pavarini,Saulo Petinatti.
ABSTRACT: Bee envenomation is frequent in humans and dogs, but uncommon in horses. This study aimed to describe a case of acute renal failure following mass envenomation in a horse. A mare was attacked by a swarm of bees and showed reluctance to move, epistaxis, and dark-brown urine. Biochemical exams revealed increase in urea and creatine serum levels. The mare did not respond to treatment and euthanasia was elected after four days of clinical course. At the necropsy, there were multifocal pinpoint to elevated skin lesions associated with edema and hemorrhage, which extended to the subcutaneous tissue and skeletal muscle, and the kidneys were diffusely dark-brown and friable. Microscopically, renal tubules were distended and filled with an orange-red,...

An anatomopathological study of hepatic coccidiosis (Calyptospora sp.) in the Acará-pixuna, Aequidens plagiozonatus Kullander, 1984 from the Brazilian state of Pará Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Videira,M.; Velasco,M.; Tortelly,R.; Menezes,R.C.; São Clemente,S.C.; Matos,E..
The present study focuses on the anatomopathological alterations provoked by parasitism by Calyptospora sp. in 40 specimens of Aequidens plagiozonatus collected in Pará, Brazil. Examinations of the fresh material by compression of the hepatopancreas and histological sections showed immature forms and oocysts characteristic of the genus Calyptospora, in addition to a large quantity of melanomacrophagic centers spread throughout the organ. No significant inflammation of the hepatic tissue was observed. The melanomacrophagic centers and the compression of the hepatocytes are part of the response of the host to the parasite. This study represents the first record of parasitism by Calyptospora in A. plagiozonatus.

An experimental model of hemolysis-induced acute pancreatitis BJMBR
Saruc,M.; Yuceyar,H.; Turkel,N.; Ozutemiz,O.; Tuzcuoglu,I.; Yuce,G.; Huseyinov,A..
The literature indicates that acute pancreatitis is a complication of massive hemolysis with a prevalence of about 20%. We describe an experimental model of hemolysis-induced acute pancreatitis. Hemolytic anemia was induced in rats by a single ip injection of 60 mg/kg of 20 mg/ml acetylphenylhydrazine (APH) in 20% (v/v) ethanol on the first experimental day (day 0). One hundred and fifty Wistar albino rats weighing 180-200 g were divided into three groups of 50 animals each: groups 1, 2 and 3 were injected ip with APH, 20% ethanol, and physiological saline, respectively. Ten rats from each group were sacrificed on study days 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Serum amylase, lipase levels and pancreatic tissue tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and platelet-activating...

An infection of Ruditapes decussatus (Bivalvia) by Rickettsia ArchiMer
Mialhe, Eric; Chagot, Dominique; Boulo, Viviane; Comps, Michel; Ruano, Francisco; Grizel, Henri.
The authors report the presence of a Rickettsia in Ruditapes decussatus from natural populations of the Algarve (Portugal). Light microscopic shows infections of varying importance in gill tissues. Some enclose small procaryotic colonies (cp) scattered in all lamellae; in others, the colonies are scarce and hypertrophic (100 mu m). These different pictures suggest an amplification process. Digestive diverticulae may also be infected, but to a lesser extent. The ultrastructural features of this intravacuolar (mvd: densified vacuolar membrane) procaryote (P) and its multiplication by scission without a complex developmental cycle allows its classification in the order Rickettsiales.

Analyse bibliographique: historique de l'huître plate, Ostrea edulis, et la Bonamiose, maladie due au protozoaire Bonamia ostreae ArchiMer
Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie.
Oyster productions represent an important part of the french aquaculture. However, diseases are considered as the first limiting factors for the development of this activity around the world. Two exemples point out this problem for the french flat oyster production: Marteiliosis, the disease of the digestive gland, caused by Marteilia refringens, and Bonamiosis, the hemocytic disease, caused by Bonamia ostreae. This report proposes a bibliography analysis of major results obtained for Bonamiosis studies.

Anatomo-pathological aspects of parasitism by nematodes of the superfamily Metastrongyloidea in wild crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) in Midwestern Brazil Ciência Rural
Ferreira Júnior,Jair Alves; Blume,Guilherme Reis; Sousa,Susy Karoline Hermes de; Carvalho,Clarissa Machado de; Gardiner,Chris.
ABSTRACT: Nematodes of the superfamily Metastrongyloidea affect the respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems of domestic carnivores and are uncommonly detected in wild animals. This report describes the lesions associated with pulmonary parasitism by nematodes of the superfamily Metastrongyloidea in a wild crab-eating fox ( Cerdocyon thous ) in the Federal District, Brazil. Grossly, there was pulmonary hyperemia, edema, and emphysema. Microscopically, there was granulomatous arteritis associated with intravascular metastrongylid. The anatomical location, characteristic lesion, and histological features of the parasite suggested that the nematode involved in this case is Angiostrongylus vasorum . This worm is frequently reported parasitizing...

Anomalias e patologias dentárias em Arctocephalus G. Saint-Hilaire & Cuvier (Pinnipedia, Otariidae) da costa do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Drehmer,César Jaeger; Ferigolo,Jorge.
The studied species were Arctocephalus australis (Zimmermann, 1783) and Arctocephalus tropicalis (Gray, 1872), (five specimens of each one). Anomalies were discussed under the light of theories which relate the ancestry of pinnipeds with the Ursidae; as well as concerning the evolutionary trends supposed for the Otariidae. Pathologies were related to alimentary and reproductive habits.

Association between prostate cancer and schistosomiasis in young patients: a case report and literature review BJID
Bacelar,Albert; Castro,Larissa G.M.C.; Queiroz,Aristides Cheto de; Café,Eduardo.
This case report refers to a 47-year old patient with prostate cancer associated with schistosomiasis mansoni, who was submitted to radical prostatectomy. This is the third report published in the literature with respect to this association, and up to the present time it is still not known whether a cause and effect relationship exists between the two pathologies. The association between schistosomiasis and cancer has been well-documented in bladder cancer; however, there are no data yet proving the association of this disease with prostatic neoplasia. In this report, a third documented case of prostatic adenocarcinoma and schistosomiasis mansoni is described and a literature review is performed.

Bacteries associees aux production de Brachionus plicatilis ArchiMer
Nicolas, Jean-louis; Joubert, M.
Bacteria associated with semi-continuous culture of Brachionus plicatilis , which is used as the first food of marine fish larvae, were counted on Zobell 2216 E medium and identified. The numbers of bacteria were very high in both Brachionus (about 10 super(11) bact. per ml of digestive content) and in water (from 1.6.10 super(6) to 4.7.10 super(7) bact. per ml). The cultures were studied at driving a time when mortalities occurred frequently. The introduction of a Pseudomonas) phenon at a proportion of about 50% to the dominant microflora persisted in time and was little influenced by diet. It has been the cause of the repression of the Vibrio, Aeromonas group which was found in an unusually small proportion. It induced a lack of microflora diversity and...

Bark Extract of Bathysa cuspidata in the Treatment of Liver Injury Induced by Carbon Tetrachloride in Rats BABT
Gonçalves,Reggiani Vilela; Matta,Sérgio Luis Pinto da; Novaes,Rômulo Dias; Leite,João Paulo Viana; Peluzio,Maria do Carmo Gouveia; Vilela,Emerson Ferreira.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bark extract Bathysa cuspidata (BCE) in the reconstitution of hepatic parenchyma and stroma after dysfunction induced by the CCl4. Liver lesions were induced by intraperitoneal administration of CCl4 (1 mL/kg) every 48 h for 12 days. The animals were treated with B. cuspidata extract (BCE) administered by gavage for another 12 days. Forty-nine rats were randomized into seven treatment groups with seven animals receiving CCl4, BCE (200, or 400 mg/kg) and the vehicle DMSO alone, or in different combinations. The extract alone showed no evidence of hepatic toxicity. In general, rats acutely exposed to CCl4 without the treatment with BCE presented high ALT and AST serum levels and high tissue content of...

The REPAMO network (network ofmollusc pathology), created in 1986, ensures the survey of shellfish health status along French coasts according? to European Directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EEC. The aims of the network are 1 - to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens, 2-to study the means to decrease the impact of pathogens already present and to survey their evolution. In 2003, the REPAMO network focused on the survey oflisted diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis) in two areas under agreement process (Banc de Granville and zone X) and on the study of abnormal morlalities. Number of reported abnormal morlalities has increased in 2003. This rise can be partly explained by the recent network restructuring, but also by the summer heatwave and...
